Joanna and Mary’s departure from Penrith was part of a major change of circumstances which would permanently break up the extended Hutchinson clan. They were going to join their respective brothers Tom and John in the Welsh borders. Since giving up Park House, Tom had acted as a carrier between Penrith and Stockton, then taken a situation as steward to Sir Francis Blake, which he left after only a few months. John had been depressed and ill since the death of his wife soon after their marriage and had sold his father’s wine business, intending to go to Portugal; prevented by the Peninsular War, he agreed to throw in his lot with Tom. Efforts to find a farm near the Clarksons, in Suffolk, proved futile, but a trip down ‘the Sylvan Wye ’, as John pointedly called it (quoting Tintern Abbey ), was more successful. John found a farm belonging to the MP, Sir Frankland Lewis, at Hindwell in Radnorshire (now Powys), and was immediately offered a sixteen-year lease at a reasonable rate. By the middle of April 1809 the four cousins were settled in their new home, or, as Mary and Sara complained, were ‘ buried in Wales’.
